Causes of low testosterone in women — woman wondering about her testosterone levels

We’ve talked about some of the common symptoms of low testosterone in women before, but we haven’t really looked into the causes until now.

Well, the short answer is that there are many possible causes.

No one has really studied the causes of low testosterone in women as much as in men, but researchers have found a few leads into what may cause women to have low testosterone. Even though there are a bunch of different causes, the result is always the same: Low T!

You probably already know that aging can cause low testosterone in women (just like it does for men), but we can tell you that there are a TON of different causes of low T that only apply to women.

The 8 Possible Causes of Low Testosterone in Women

Here are 8 possible causes of low testosterone in women according to betterhealth.vic.gov.au:

  1. Getting older – like we mentioned earlier, beginning in their teenage years, most women’s testosterone levels decrease naturally
  2. Ovary removal – also known as oophorectomy, having your ovaries removed can reduce your testosterone levels
  3. Ovary failure due to chemotherapy drugs or other drugs – also known as chemical oophorectomy, anything that affects your ovaries can cause your testosterone levels to drop
  4. Oestrogen therapy – Oestrogen suppresses the hormone that stimulates testosterone production
  5. Loss of menstrual periods in a woman before menopause, which could be caused by various factors such as stress, extreme weight loss, or extreme exercise – also known as hypothalamic amenorrhoea
  6. Early menopause (before the age of 40) – also known as premature ovarian failure
  7. Adrenal gland issues – also known as adrenal insufficiency
  8. Pituitary gland issues such as hypopituitarism or hyperprolactinemia

As you can see, low testosterone for women can be caused by many different things, not least of which are issues related to those pesky ovaries, which men obviously don’t have to worry about.

The symptoms of low T in women are various, and low T can cause many of the same issues in women that it causes in men.

What this all means is that women can have low T issues just like men can, even though the causes of these issues are altogether different, making testosterone treatment a possible option for women suffering from low T.

Because low T can cause all kinds of terrible symptoms, you want to get it checked out right away.
