Testosterone And Aging
Testosterone replacement therapy isn’t going to make you any younger — that’s not how testosterone and aging works.
There’s an incredible amount of misinformation out there about testosterone — how it’s some sort of miracle drug, that it will make you feel (or even look) five or ten or twenty years younger, that it will give you an unnaturally long life.
That’s just not the case.
Testosterone And Aging — It’s No Miracle Drug
We’re not part of the “anti-aging” movement, and we never will be.
Instead, we focus on fighting the unnatural acceleration of aging.
Here’s the problem with testosterone and aging — Testosterone replacement therapy is a medical treatment for men and women who have abnormally low levels of testosterone, not a method of magically growing younger.
What testosterone replacement therapy does is help you feel like the age you are by eliminating some of the stressors on your health, stressors that low testosterone can cause.
We’re not stopping time—we’re getting back to baseline.
If you’re 60 years old and you feel like you’re 60 years old, that’s normal.
But if you’re 60 years old and you feel like you’re 90 years old, that’s not ok.
If you’re suffering from the symptoms of low testosterone, testosterone replacement therapy can get you back to feeling normal again.
Testosterone isn’t going to make you feel like you’re 20 again, and it’s not going to cure everything that ails you.
However, if you have a clinical diagnosis of low testosterone (hypogonadism), testosterone replacement therapy can banish those symptoms and stop you from feeling so blah all the time.
That’s our goal with all our patients — helping you feel like yourself again.
The Truth About Testosterone And Aging — Too Much Testosterone Can Cause Harm
One thing we’re extraordinarily careful of is finding the precise amount of testosterone that’s right for you.
We follow guidelines from the endocrine society to begin your treatment, but our ultimate goal is to relieve your specific symptoms. By titrating to symptoms, we can find the perfect testosterone level for your body.
Unfortunately, some less-than-reputable testosterone providers place your levels well beyond normal, or don’t handle your diagnosis properly to begin with — they seem to think testosterone and aging are on opposite ends of the spectrum, and more of one reduces the other.
The truth is more complicated.
While this may keep some patients happy at first, it’s detrimental to your health. Too much testosterone can cause a variety of unpleasant side effects, and we want to avoid that as much as we want to relieve your symptoms.
Our goal is to keep you happy and healthy, not happy at the expense of your health.
If You Think You’re Suffering From Low Testosterone, Take The ADAM Quiz
If you think you might have low testosterone, take the Androgen Deficiency in Aging Males (ADAM) quiz—it will help you determine whether or not you need to speak with a testosterone provider about your symptoms.
If you answered “Yes” to answers 1 and 7 or to 3 other questions, you may be suffering from low testosterone.
When you speak to your medical care provider next, make sure you mention that you took this quiz.
