LOW T RESOURCES

Testosterone therapy for women is becoming more and more prevalent with each passing year.

Although women have significantly lower levels of testosterone than men (about 1/10th), testosterone still plays an important role in the female body.

Even though this level is lower in your body, it still needs to be in balance for you to feel well.

You may have found that the focus is usually just on your estrogen or progesterone levels, and while those levels are important, what you really need is balance in all three hormones.

If you’re a woman and you haven’t felt like yourself in ages, you may be suffering from low testosterone.

Testosterone therapy for women is quite safe and effective, and it can help treat many different symptoms.

Most importantly, it can help you feel like yourself again.

What Does Low Testosterone Look Like In Women And How Can I Tell If I Have It?

The symptoms of low testosterone in women often are similar to the symptoms men experience, and they can also mimic the symptoms of low estrogen. Here are just a few of the symptoms to look for:

  • Fatigue and exhaustion
  • Weight gain
  • Difficulty losing weight
  • Lack of interest in sex
  • Mood swings
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Hair loss

To read more about how testosterone therapy for women targets these symptoms, read our article here. Although symptoms are important, symptoms are not enough alone to indicate low testosterone.

Combined with an analysis of your testosterone levels, these symptoms may indicate that your testosterone levels are below normal.

If so, testosterone replacement therapy may be right for you.

However, you won’t really know until you get tested and speak with a testosterone replacement therapy provider.

Can Testosterone Therapy Really Help Me?

Women suffer from nearly the same symptoms that men suffer from when their testosterone is low—you can therefore expect much the same benefits that men receive when they go on testosterone replacement therapy.

Testosterone therapy for women has been found to be very effective when certain methods are used.

Most notably, testosterone has been found to be quite efficient at treating lack of libido in postmenopausal women—click here and here to read several articles about testosterone therapy for women with menopause.

However, because testosterone is only indicated for men right now in the United States, you need to choose your testosterone provider carefully.

If you use a provider who employs outdated or dangerous methods of testosterone replacement therapy, you put yourself at more risk.

What Should I Look For In A Provider And What Type Of Testosterone Therapy For Women Is Best For Me?

You need to make sure you get an exact dose created specifically for you, and you need a provider who carefully analyzes your native levels and titrates to your unique symptoms.

We almost exclusively recommend injections when it comes to testosterone therapy for women; however, sometimes topicals are a viable option.

You should get testosterone injections over other methods because other methods are both imprecise and designed for men.

Treatment options like patches or pellets may not work for you because the doses assume both a higher body weight and a higher level of natural testosterone—testosterone therapy for women has to be a bit different.

At TCT, we stay away from testosterone pellets (you can read more about why here), and we have found that intramuscular injections are the safest and most effective way to titrate the precise amount of testosterone that fits your needs.

We generally recommend a weekly injection schedule with doses much, much lower than a man would receive.

Still, the dose is targeted slightly above the normal range because levels fall consistently throughout the week.

This is another reason pellets are discouraged—pellets allow levels to go too high at the beginning and then to fall well below normal for months at a time, because the pellets don’t have time-release properties.

Once your symptoms begin to improve, we stop increasing the dose and begin a maintenance program of weekly injections.

Testosterone isn’t for everyone, and it’s important to check your levels before you begin any form of treatment.

You may find that your testosterone levels are fine and that your estrogen and progesterone levels are what really need to be addressed.
